House Budget forging ahead with megabill markup

House Republicans are sticking with their plan to hold a crucial committee vote needed to launch their party-line tax and spending package for floor debate — despite last-minute objections from fiscal hawks.

The House Budget Committee will hold its morning markup Friday, as scheduled, and GOP leaders expect the panel to approve the bill after members deliver their opening statements.

Speaker Mike Johnson and his team spoke with holdouts across the Republican Conference throughout the night to shore up the votes to approve the megabill central to enacting President Donald Trump’s domestic agenda. There was extensive back-and-forth over a series of texts and phone calls with hard-liners over Medicaid.

Leaders are feeling more optimistic about the measure’s prospects, according to people familiar with the negotiations, but there is still more work to do: Assuming the package goes through Friday, talks will continue through the weekend to approve changes that will be made to the bill text before hitting the House floor next week.
